Carol Kay (Thompson) Hall

Carol Kay Hall (née Thompson), 77, died peacefully of complications of a hernia, March 16, 2020, in Elizabethton, TN.

Those who knew Mom the best knew that her life was like a four-act play – a play in which the first few acts encompassed some tough stuff: a confusing childhood, teenage motherhood, abusive husbands, her own parental missteps, poverty, fear, regrets; decades where peace was difficult to find. Understandably, that kind of life could have easily turned Mom’s heart jaded, cynical, guarded.  

But if you knew Kay Hall in the final act of her life you already know – those words don’t describe her at all. The Kay Hall we knew was adventurous, loving, compassionate, welcoming. Her heart was soft and forgiving. Her smiles were genuine. As if refined by the fires of her life, she absolutely shined.

How did that happen? What was her secret? And now, most importantly, what can we take from that as we continue our journey to our own final act? After all, death is always closer than we think.

The change in Mom’s life wasn’t because of what she DID, it was because of who she KNEW.  

Mom took the time. She opened the book. She read the words in her bible that said, “seek and you will find,” and she decided to do just that. She sought him. And just as He said He would, Jesus showed up. And when Jesus shows Himself to you… well, you CHANGE.

Mom’s in Heaven now so I know she’s doing just fine. And if she could say anything to us now, I know (as we all do) one thing would be “I love you, MORE!” followed by a plead, “Please take the time now. Get to know Him!”

A potluck “Celebration of Kay Hall’s life” was held at Doe River Gorge, Hampton, TN on March 19, 2020. We ate her favorite foods, told funny stories, laughed until we cried (well, we were crying anyway), and left feeling better than we did when we walked in the door. It was just Mom’s style and I know she would have loved it!

In lieu of flowers or donations, please just take a moment and open that book for yourself. Luke 11:9 says “…seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” It’s so simple.
