J.W. Shipley- Piney Flats

J.W. Shipley, 86, passed away July 27, 2016 at NHC Healthcare of Johnson City. He was born October 10, 1929 in Piney Flats to the late Mr. Robert Lee Shipley and Nora Grace. J.W. was retired from Gordons Furniture and attended Rocky Springs Baptist Church. He was a simple man that enjoyed bringing a smile to people’s faces. In his spare time, he enjoyed working on lawn mowers. J.W. found great pleasure in handing out candy on ‘his route’ through the city. There is a great chance that someone you know has received a piece of candy from J.W. sometime during his many years of doing this.

In addition to his parents, J.W. is preceded in death by a sister, Anna Lee Shipley King; brothers, Willard and John Henry; and 3 great-grandchildren, Allie, Brooklyn and Chloe.

Those left to cherish his memory are: his loving wife of 68 years, Allie; son, Allen W. Shipley (Judy) of Johnson City; sister, Rena Lewis of Piney Flats; brothers, Wendell Shipley (Ann) of Gray, Robert Shipley (Shirley) of Kingsport and Donald L. Shipley (Anna Jane) of Piney Flats; 3 grandchildren, Derek Wagner (Dawn), Robin Hartley (Chris) and Heather Coonley (Matthew); 9 great grandchildren, Dylan, Dakota, Dawson, Hannah, Madilyn, Parker, Kyla, David and Emma; several nieces and nephews; and way too many special friends at NHC and throughout the area to list.

There will be no services held at this time.

The family would like to thank the staff at Caris Hospice and NHC of Johnson City for the care and compassion shown to the ‘Candyman’, also lovingly known as ‘Poppa J’.
