Kingsport, TN- Ronald Eugene Hickam                                 

Ronald Eugene Hickam, 55, passed away on the evening of Sunday, June 23, 2013 at Brook Haven Manor in Kingsport, TN. Ronald was born March 15, 1958 in Wilmington, DE to Lena Perry Hickam and the late Bobby Hickam. He was a native of Bloomingdale, but had lived in the area most of his life. 

Ronald Hickam retired from the Sullivan County School System after serving them for 26 years. In his spare time, he enjoyed riding motorcycles. 

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Hickam. 

Survivors include his special friend, Teresa Ennis of Church Hill; daughter, Carrie Hickam of Kingsport; 3 sons, Travis Hickam of Kingsport, Terry and Jerry Hickam of Florida; sisters, Rhonda Lane of Blountville and Teresa Williams of Church Hill; a grandchild and several nieces and nephews. 

It was Ronalds wish to be cremated and there will be a private memorial service to be announced at a later time.

Johnson City, TN- Laura Jackson Fletcher                                 

Laura Jackson Fletcher, 96, passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at her home.  Laura was born on June 6, 1917 to the late Joseph and Nancy Jane Hayes Jackson in Pound, VA.  She was a native of Pound but had lived in the area since 1975. 

Laura Jackson Fletcher graduated from Christopher Gist High School in 1937. She went on to begin working at Briggs Manufacturing in Detroit, MI during WWII making airplane parts.  Laura was a member of the Boones Creek Baptist Church and enjoyed cooking and participating in fundraising.  

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Orville Fletcher; brothers, Cecil, Elvin, and Johnny Jackson; and sisters, Elgie Stallard and Drusilla Varner. 

Survivors include her sisters, Nora Davis of Charleston, WV and Corena Patton of Manasses, VA; many nieces/nephews and great-nieces/nephews; Locally: Gary and Peggy Varner of Johnson City. 

Visitation for Laura Jackson Fletcher will be Friday, June 28, 2013 from 11am-12pm at Boones Creek Baptist Church, 304 Pickens Bridge Road, Johnson City, TN 37615. A Celebration of Life service will begin at 12 with Reverend Ken Kyker and Reverend Arnold "Bud" Pate officiating. The interment will immediately follow the funeral service at Snyder's Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will include friends and family present. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Boones Creek Baptist Church.

Wade H. Baird-Johnson City, TN 

Wade Baird, 53, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2013 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born March 2, 1960 in Johnson City, TN to the late William H. and Virginia C. Baird and lived there his entire life. 

Wade enjoyed building and working with model airplanes and rockets. He was a motorcycle mechanic and could fix anything. 

Survivors include his loving wife, Anita Jones Baird; 3 uncles, Yates Baird, Paul Baird, and Norman Cash; 5 aunts, Mary Ledford, Patsy Lyons, Peggy Capell, Joy Penley, and Betty Honeycutt; 2 special friends, Mark Spears and Mark Hawkins. 

The family of Wade H. Baird will hold a Celebration of Life service at a later date.

Mary Colleen Durham Hawkins-Gray, TN

Mary Colleen Durham Hawkins, 78, passed away May 20, 2013 at the Johnson City Medical Center. She was born December 25, 1934 in Gray, TN to the late Everett Durham and Nellie King. Mrs. Hawkins had lived in the area her entire life.

Mary was a loving and kind mother and grandmother. She was a licensed caregiver and loved by all that knew her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles "Buddy" C. Hawkins, Jr.

Survivors include her son, Charles C. Hawkins III of Gray, TN; brother, Joe Durham of Gray, TN; 2 grandchildren, Kym and Brett Hawkins; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will be holding a Memorial Service for Mary Colleen Durham Hawkins at Snyder's Memorial Gardens, Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 4th, 2013 from 6-8 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions/donations be made to any Alzheimer's, Dementia, or Diabetes Research Foundations.

Phillip McDonald Thomas-Johnson City

Phillip McDonald Thomas, 90, passed away May 27, 2013 at the Franklin Woods Community Hospital. He was born January 25, 1923 to the late Lynn William Thomas and Nema Thompson Thomas in Micaville, NC. Phillip was a native of Johnson City and lived in the area for about 65 years. 

Phillip McDonald Thomas graduated from Micaville High school in 1942 and went on to earn a B.S. at ETSU. In addition, he received his Masters Degree at Peabody College in Nashville, TN and completed one year toward his Doctorate in Chapel Hill, NC. 

Dean Thomas, for some time, was Head of Interfraternity Council and a brother of the Pi Kappa Alphas. He was instrumental in helping the Pikes get their fraternity house. 

Phillip was an avid gardener and fisherman. His inquisitive, scholarly mind led him to a life in education first as a biology teacher, then Administrator and enthusiastic Dean of Men at East Tennessee State University. He was a man with a gregarious, open and embracing personality. Dean Thomas was am exceptional mentor and loyal friend to those who loved him. Stronger than death, his personality and influence will live on forever. 

In addition to his parents, Dean Thomas was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Jake, Hugh and Clay Thomas. 

Survivors include his daughter, Elizabeth Thomas Borin of Knoxville; ex-wife, Jean Thomas; sister, Veida Thomas Ayers of Bakersville, NC; grandson, Matthew Thomas Borin of Knoxville. 

The family of Phillip McDonald Thomas will hold a private Sunrise Service on June 15, 2013 at Roan Mountain.

Johnson City- Roger D. Killen

Roger D. Killen, 71, passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at Johnson City Medical Center. He was born March 6, 1942 in Johnson City, TN to the late William Ernest, Sr. & Louise Ball Killen. Mr. Killen was a native of Limestone and had lived in the Tri-City area his entire life. 

Roger graduated from Washington College Academy and had also attended ETSU. He belonged to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Johnson City and often attended McKinley Memorial Bible Church also located in Johnson City. 

He was a member of the local Moose Lodge, VFW, and Elks Lodge. Roger was a licensed pilot and loved to fly; he also enjoyed riding motorcycles. 

In addition to his parents, Roger is preceded in death by his sister, Patsy Elliot and grandparents, Robert & Nita Ball and Mr. & Mrs. Payton Killen 

Survivors include his loving wife, Linda W. Killen, of the home; daughter, Angel & husband, Joe Folk of Lilburn, GA; son, Brian Killen of Johnson City; brother, William Ernest, Jr. & wife, Linda E. Killen  of Johnson City; niece, Jennifer Killen-Riggs and several other nieces and nephews. 

The family of Roger D. Killen will receive friends on Sunday, May 26, 2013 at Snyder's Memorial Gardens, Funeral Home from 4:00 to 5:00 pm followed by a brief remembrance service. 

It was Roger's wishes to thank each of his dear friends that had been so influential in his life. Although many have preceded him in death, there may still be some special friends that these words will touch just as each and every one of you touched his life. In accordance with Roger wishes, the family would like to give special thanks to David Snyder and Roger's mentor, the late Kay Shell.

Clarence Taylor Shipley, "C.T." age 94, of Johnson City, TN, passed away surrounded by loving family in the early evening of Saturday, May 18, 2013 at Hermitage Health Center of Elizabethton.  

He was the son of the late Herman S. Shipley and Lula Taylor Shipley.  A graduate of Science Hill High School, he played trumpet in the orchestra.  He attended East Tennessee State College before entering the United States Army, serving from 1941-1945 during WWII.  A Purple Heart recipient, he was a member of the 3rd Infantry,  "Rock of the Marne," serving in North Africa and the European Theater. 

Prior to moving to Jacksonville, Florida, the Shipley family resided in Kingsport, TN, where C. T. volunteered in scouting, in his children's schools, and in church as Sunday School superintendent, teacher, and choir member.  His hobbies included woodworking, metal working, gardening, music, and reading.  A very generous man of strong principle and faith, he was devoted to his family and dearly loved all children.  After retirement, C.T. and Frances returned to Johnson City. 

He was married to the late Frances Keys Shipley and is survived by three daughters, Vivian Shipley Eckerson and her husband, Art, of Johnson City; Catherine Cartus of Johnson City; and Jane Shipley Cox and husband, Bill, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; two sisters, Velma Simerly of Johnson City, and Doris Fortner of Erwin; three granddaughters, Kelly Hughes and her husband Mike of Charlotte, NC; Kristen Daniel and husband Wes of Knoxville, TN; and Kimberly Cartus and fiancee Nathan Moloney of Atlanta, GA; three great grandchildren, Taylor Hughes, William Hughes, and Ryan Hughes of Charlotte, NC; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great, great nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Agnes Pickel, Lucile Shipley, Edna Stanton, and Elaine Johnson, nieces Clara Pierce and Kim  Carson, and nephew Gerald Keys. 

The family will receive friends at the First United Methodist Church of Johnson City on Sunday, May 26, 2013, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. A Celebration of Life service will follow in the sanctuary at 2:30 p.m. officiated by the Reverend Tim Bracken and Dr. Garland Thayer.  Military honors and graveside service will take place at Fairview Cemetery, Jonesborough, TN, at 5:00 p.m.

Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to First United Methodist Church Capital Campaign, 900 Spring Street, Johnson City, Tn 37604 or to the charity of your choice. Gray, TN- Durward G. Gumm, Jr.

Durward G. Gumm, Jr., 83, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2013 at his home, in the presence of his family, in Gray. He was born on January 17, 1930 in Parkersburg, WV to the late Durward G. and Dora Powell Gumm. He was a native of Parkersburg, but lived in the local area for thirty-four years. 

Durward served in the Army and Navy after which he worked at various positions in the telecom industry to include R&D engineering.He was a member of the 11th Airborne division "Silent Wings"association, Buick and Pontiac Club of America, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and the Civil Marksmanship Program. 

Mr. Gumm was a devout Lutheran and in the past had been in the role of Assisting Deacon. His hobbies and talents included: woodworking, metal smith work, fabricating parts for classic autos, recreational piloting of small piston aircraft, motorcycle riding, target shooting, boating, boat racing and making his own ammunition. 

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Marjorie Gumm, of the home; 2 sons, Dallas G. Gumm of Denver, NC and Douglas G. and wife, Diana Gumm of Hillsdale, WY; sister, Delores Rake; 4 brothers, Arlen Gumm, Kenneth Gumm, Robert Gumm and Ronald Gumm; 3 grandchildren, Daniel G. and Danielle Gumm of Cheyenne, WY and Dustin G. Gumm of Hillsdale, WY.; great-grandchild, Lydia I. Gumm of Cheyenne, WY. 

Family will be receiving friends Sunday, May 19, 2013 at Snyder's Memorial Gardens in Gray, TN from 5 to 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 212 Sunset Drive, Johnson City on Monday, May 20, 2013 at 1:30 pm. Pastor Ed Myers will Officiate. Graveside services for Durward G. Gumm, Jr. will be at 3:00 pm at the Washington County Memory Gardens.

Jonesborough, TN- Marian Elizabeth Rickard Purdham                                

Marian Elizabeth Rickard Purdham, 83, passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at the Johnson City Medical Center. She was born in Sandusky, Ohio on March 17, 1930 to the late Charles and Florance Rickard. 

Marian was a native of Sandusky, OH but lived in the local area for 31 years. She was of the Christian Faith and had an extreme love for animals. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ross L. Purdham, 2 sisters, and 4 brothers. 

Survivors include her son, Ross Purdham, Jr. and wife, Laurie; 4 daughters- Trudy Bucklew and husband, Larry; Joyce Woodward and husband, Fred; Connie Wohltman and husband, Ray; Roxanne Cox and husband, Billy; sister, Lillian Larson; 11 grandchildren- Guy Babione, Gerald Babione, Ginger English, Brenda Money, Jennifer Flynn, R.T. Purdham, Henry Dwight, Casey Koss, Tyler Wohltman, Little Bill Cox, and Matthew Cox; 20 great-grandchildren- Ashley, Crystal, Stephen, Elizabeth, Josh, Travis, Heather, Tiffany, Michael, Will, Nathan, Isaac, Hannah, Caty, Amanda, Elizabeth "Elle", Kimberly, Jacob, Jessica, and Joshua; and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

Amanda Kay Johnson, 32, passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2013 in her home. Amanda was born on July 9, 1980 to Timothy Johnson andson and the late Beverly Johnson-Skeens. She was a native of Kingsport, TN and had lived there her entire life. 

Amanda was a member of the Power House Church in Kingsport. She spent her time volunteering her services for area Susan G. Koman events and participating in other cancer awareness events. 

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. William C. Johnson and Mr. & Mrs. Charles Atkins and aunt Judy Ann Bowser. 

Survivors include her beloved fiance, Joe Carty; father, Timothy and, step-mother, Susan Johnson; son, William Eddie Johnson; sister, Holly Sue Christian; step-brothers, Joshua Leller and Jonathan Perry; aunt, Lisa Slusher; uncles, Eddie and Eric Atkins; special cousins, Robin Johnson and Marcy and Misty Bowser

Johnson City, TN- Harrell Alton Sanders                                 

Harrell Alton Sanders, 84, passed away Thursday, May 9, 2013 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born in Sullivan County on March 17, 1929 to the late Sue Marie Sanders. 

Harrell was a native of Piney Flats and had lived there his entire life.  He worked in road construction and retired from Bradford Construction Company. He was of the Baptist faith. 

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Fern Sanders; daughter, Connie Sanders; two brothers, William (Billy) Sanders and Gentry Hodges.

Survivors include son, Stanley Sanders of Kingsport; granddaughter, Angel Sparks of Gray; and great granddaughter, Shyanne Sparks. 

Graveside Services for Mr. Harrell Alton Sanders will be held at Edgefield United Methodist Church Cemetery in Piney Flats on Monday, May 13, 2013 at 1:00pm. Reverend Gary Hodges will be officiating.

 Jonesborough, TN- Johnny Howard Mitchell

 

Johnny Howard Mitchell, 75, passed away Friday, May 10, 2013 at Four Oaks Healthcare in Jonesborough, TN. He was born on May 19, 1937 in Limestone, TN to the late Bruce and Daisy Mitchell. 

Johnny was a life long resident of Washington County and Jonesborough, TN.  He worked in the construction business for the majority of his life and retired from Herman Jones Construction of Johnson City. He was a member of the Faith Tabernacle of Johnson City and helped start the Washington County/Johnson City Civil Defense.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by granddaughter, Keri Elizabeth Kyker.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Faye Broyles Mitchell; daughter, Carolyn Faye Mitchell; son, Johnny Allen Mitchell; 2 grandsons, Travis Lee Kyker and Jacob Allen Mitchell; sister & brother-in-law, Janie and Travis Cox "Tab" of Limestone; sister, Willie Kate Mitchell of Johnson City; brother, Harold Mitchell of Johnson City; special nephew, Michael "Mike" Mitchell; special cousin, Betty Mitchell Williams

Sue Ellen Fitzgerald, 71 passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at the Indian Path Medical Center in Kingsport, TN. She was born on November 26, 1941 to the late William David and Susie Katherine Britt. 

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Fitzgerald was preceded in death by 2 daughters, Jane and Tammy Fitzgerald; and brother, Bill Britt. 

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Carl Fitzgerald; brother, Ray Britt; daughter, Robin Wexler; grandson, Joe Wexler; granddaughter, Andrea Wexler and great granddaughter, Aubrie. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Liberty Church on Liberty Church Road. 

It was Sue's request not to have a memorial service, but for everyone to remember her the was she was -in service to God and others.

Elizabethton- Robert L. McClellan 

Robert L. McClellan, 75, passed away Monday, April 15, 2013 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.  He was born September 27, 1937 in Scott County, VA to the late Elmer and Rildia McClellan. Mr. McClellan was a native of Scott County but had lived in this area for over 30 years. 

Robert was of the Baptist Faith and a member of True Gospel Baptist Church in Elizabethton. Outside of the church, he enjoyed fishing and hunting ginseng. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Maher and a grandson, Tommy Lee McClellan, Jr. 

Survivors include his wife, Ann McClellan; daughter, Patricia McClellan; son, Tommy McClellan; brother, Larry Alfred; 4 grandchildren, Jimmy Maher, Wayne Guinn, Leslie Schultz, and Kristi McClellan; special aunt, Virginia Brown Gillenwater; and 5 neices and nephews. 

The family will be receiving friends for Mr. Robert L. McClellan Thursday, April 18, 2013 at Snyder's Memorial Gardens from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. The service will begin at 2:00 p.m. with the graveside following. Reverend Dean Presnell will be officiating. Pallbearers will be family and friends present.

Johnson City, TN - Kenneth L. Reinertson 

Kenneth L. Reinertson, 68, passed away on April 4, 2013 at NHC healthcare in Johnson City.  Mr. Reinertson was born on September 18, 1944 in Yonkers, NY to the late Charles Norman Reinertson and Evelyn Purdy Tilton. He was a native of both Southern California and Washington D.C., but had lived in this area for 8.5 years. 

Kenneth had a M.P.A. and Bachelors Degree in English Literature and was a retired program manager for Real Property of the United States Air Force. He was an artist, a writer, and enjoyed building model airplanes. Mr. Reinertson was of the Lutheran faith and a member of the Wellness Center. 

Survivors include his wife, Marcie, Johnson City; 2 daughters, Melinda, Falls Church, VA, and Karie, Asheville, NC; brother, Bob Reinertson, Santa Barbara, CA; 2 grandchildren and 5 nieces and nephews. 

Services for Kenneth L. Reinertson will be held in the Arlington National Cemetery. The date will be announced at a later time.

Kingsport, TN - Timothy Brownlow Peregoy, Sr.

Timothy Peregoy, Sr., 46, passed away on April 3, 2013 in Johnson City.  Mr. Peregoy was born to Brownlow and Lena Mae Barnes Peregoy on July 18, 1966 in Washington County. He was a native of Gray and lived there his entire life. 

Timothy was of the Baptist faith. He liked to fish and ride motorcycles and loved to spend time with his grandson. 

Mr. Peregoy was preceded in death by his father, Brownlow Peregoy; sister, Elizabeth Peregoy; 2 brothers, Teddy Peregoy, Jr. and Teddy Peregoy, Sr. 

His survivors include his wife of thirty years, Dawna "Dawnut" Peregoy; mother, Lena Peregoy; and step-father, Willie Peters; sons, Timothy Brownlow, Jr. and wife, Karla, and Brandon R. Thomas Peregoy; sisters, Sara Gardner and husband, Rick, and Karen and husband, Kenneth Davis; brother, Jason Peregoy; mother and father-in-law, Brenda and Tommy Laws, Sr.; grandson, Alexander Lynn "Buddy Boy" Peregoy; best friends, Trent Taylor and Carmen Hughes; and several special aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.  

The family of Timothy will receive friends on Monday, April 8, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. at Snyder's Memorial Gardens in Gray, TN. Richard Chapman will be officiating.

Elizabeth (Lizz) Lee Hale-Hodges 47 passed away to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 02, 2013 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Lizz was born on July 2, 1965 to Jackee Wyant Hale and the late Arthur Lee Hale, in Los Angeles, CA. She was a native of El Segundo, CA, but had lived in the Johnson City area for about 17 years.

Lizz enjoyed spending time with her son "D J" (her cherished love and joy).  She also enjoyed working with hair & cosmetics, crafting with beads, sun & moon symbols, flowers, and her cats. She loved the beach and lived in Hawaii before moving to Tennessee.

In addition to her father, she is preceded in death by her two brothers, Jay Cohen and Rexx Hale.

Survivors of Lizz Hale-Hodges are:her loving mother, Jackee Wyant Hale; her son Daniel Jay Hodges, the father of her son, Daniel R. Hodges; Sisters, Susan & Steve Robison, Theresa Draper, and sister-in-law, Marcie Hale; Brother, Mark & Pepper Braun; nephews, Joseph, Bobby, Matthew & Kevin.

Gray, TN - Kenneth Ray Clawson 

Kenneth Ray Clawson, 73, passed away on Friday, March 29, 2013 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born on October 17, 1939 to the late Charles & Elizabeth Clawson in Harlan, KY.

Kenneth was a graduate of Hall High School in Harlan, KY. In 1961 he went to work as a Chemical Operator at Holston Defense Corporation in Kingsport, TN; after many years of dedication, he retired in 1997.

Mr. Clawson was of the Baptist faith; he was a lifetime fisherman and was a huge fan of Kentucky basketball. Kenneth was a very devoted family man, and was deeply in love with his wife of 55 years, Edwina Rose Clawson. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Cleo Rednour & Ada Jean Bostic; also a brother, Charles Clawson, Jr.

Survivors of Kenneth Clawson are his wife, Edwina Rose Clawson; Sons, Kenny Clawson & Tom Collins, David Clawson & wife, Debra; Grandson, Anthony Clawson; Sisters, Edna Creech, Opal Miracle, and Louise Walters; as well as several Nieces and Nephews.

Harold "Mac" McDaniel, 71, of Kingsport, TN, passed away March 22, 2013 at the Holston Valley Medical Center.  He was born on July 14, 1941 to the late Raymond and Cornelia McDaniel in Pennsylvania He was a native of Pennsylvania and had lived in the area for 50 years.  Harold "Mac" McDaniel retired from the Kingsport Press after 42 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Mildred McDaniel.

Survivors include his wife, Loretta McDaniel , of the home; brother, Robert McDaniel and wife, Sue; daughters, Patty Chase and husband, David and Rhonda Shelton; son, Michael McDaniel and wife, Sara; step-daughters, Cindy and Patty Carter; step-sons, Jack Carter and John Allison; mother of his children, Nancy McDaniel; grandchildren, Katie and Levi Shelton, Trevor Chase, and Molly McDaniel,.

Don was born on July, 6, 1940 to the late Crowell & Frances Horton in Port St. Joe, FL. He was a native of Colorado but had lived in the Gray area for the last seven years.

He attended St. Dominic's Catholic Church in Kingsport, TN and was a member of the Unaka Rod & Gun Club.

Fredrick James Norton, 71, of Kingsport passed away March 22, 2013 at the Life Care Center in Gray.  He was born on December 1, 1941 and lived in both Washington and Sullivan Counties over the course of his life.

Fredrick achieved many things in his life. He was a graduate of Sulphur Springs High School, and went on to complete 4 years of service in the United States Air Force. Mr. Norton retired from Tennessee Eastman Chemical Company.He was preceded in death by his parents, Dayton and Myrtle Norton and 2 brothers, Donald Lee and Thomas Gordon Norton.

Survivors include his daughter, Angela Nicole Norton, Kingsport; brother, Lawrence Norton, California; 4 sisters, Mary Gordon, Panama City, Wanda Hicks and husband, Wallace, Kingsport; Phyllis Roberts and husband, Dwight, Gray; Sandra Tittle and husband, Gerald, Atlanta; 3 grandchildren, Brittany England, Hannah and Colton Roberts.

Roan Mountain, TN - Dulaney Hughes, 72

Master Sergeant Dulaney "Dee" Hughes went home to be with the Lord in the early morning hours of Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital in Elizabethton, TN.

"Dee" was born on May 18, 1940 in Roan Mountain, TN; to the late Roby & Lillian Hughes. He lived his entire life in the Roan Mountain area. 

He graduated from Happy Valley High School and later dedicated 26 years to the US Air Force from which he retired as Master Sergeant.  "Dee" was a member of Piney Grove Freewill Baptist Church in Hampton, TN.  He spent his time working with computers and also enjoyed listening to country and gospel music.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by his sister, Doris Durrett; and brother, Carl Hughes. 

Survivors include his loving wife, Marie Gullion Hughes; Daughters Angla Lenoir Hughes, of Myrtle Beach, SC; Tina Gullion, ofWeber City, VA; Anitra Lane, of Old Hickory, TN; Sons, Eric Hughes, of Myrtle Beach, SC; Darren Gullion, of Bristol, TN; Sister, Thelma Hill, of Gray, TN; Brother, Kenny Hughes, of Kingsport, TN; Fourteen grandchildren and several Nieces and Nephews.

The family will have a Memorial Service at 3:00 pm on Saturday, March 23, 2013 in the chapel of Piney Grove Freewill Baptist church with Pastor Ted Lewis officiating. The church is located at 733 Piney Grove Rd in Hampton, TN .

 Mr. Garrett was born March 1, 1958 in Washington Co., TN to Ollie Wilson and the late George Sherman Garrett. He was a native of Jonesborough and had lived in Washington County area all of his life.

 Danny was of the Baptist faith. He also worked at and was retired from the Johnson City Utilities.  Mr. Garrett enjoyed Nascar racing and fishing

 In addition to his father, he is preceded in death by a son Charles James Hopson.

Mr. Abraham was born April 6, 1951 in New York, NY to the late John & Aida Abraham. He was a native of the Bronx and had lived in Limestone, TN for the past 10 years.

Mary "Diddy" Elizabeth Sanders, 90, passed away on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at her home in Gray, TN. She was born on December 22, 1922 in Washington County, TN to the late Adam Charles Fox, Sr & Lula Dean Sellars Fox. Diddy was a life long native of Washington County.

Mrs. Sanders was an employee of ITT Northern Electric for 18 years.  She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church and was also a member of Eastern Star.

Diddy was a fun loving person that loved spending time with her family. 

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Clarence E. Sanders who passed away in 1994; her son, Jerry E. Sanders; as well as 3 sisters and 4 brothers.

Surviving  Diddy Sanders are daughters, Pat L. Jennifer Louise Perry Yates, 30, passed away early Friday morning, February 15, 2013 at her residence in Fayetteville, GA

Mrs. Yates is a native of Jamestown, NY; born on January 27, 1983, the daughter of Barbara Ann Perky Stevens and the late Carmen Perry Sr. Jennifer had spent ten years in the Tri-Cities area, a member of Daniel Boone Class of 2002 and lived the past six years in Fayetteville, GA. 

Jennifer was a very loving wife and mother. She enjoyed helping with children, loved to read, took pleasure in listening to Christian music and was a member of White Water Church in Fayetteville, GA.

In addition to her father, Jennifer Yates is preceded in death by her aunt, Kim Fink.

Franz D. Wessel, Jr.

 

Memorial Services for Franz Dewey Wessel, Jr. of Gilbert, SC will be held February 16, 2013 at St. Michael's Lutheran Church, Columbia, SC at 2:00 pm. Rev. Dwight C. Wessinger will be conducting the services. A private graveside service for the family will be held following the service. Mr. Wessel joined the Triumphant Church on February 9, 2013

Mr. Wessel was born in Charleston, SC, July 1, 1920 to the late Dewey Franz and Sarah Canady Wessel. He was the husband of the late Sevilla Irene Humbert Wessel. Mr. and Mrs. Wessel enjoyed 60 years of marriage. During their marriage they were blessed with 3 children: Stephen Franz Wessel, Sharon L. (Glass) and Sally Lynne (Orr).

Mr. Wessel joined the Navy in 1938 and was assigned to the USS New York. He then was assigned to the USS Swanson and then the USS Metcalf. He served in the Navy for 7 years attaining the rating of Chief Water Tender.  Mr. Wessel served 4 years in the Naval Reserves. He received a commendation for his joint effort in saving the USS Swanson after the ship had been rammed by the USS Roe. Mr. Wessel took part in all theaters during WWII.

After leaving the Navy, Mr. Wessel was employed by SCE&G in Charleston, SC starting at Charlotte Street Steam Plant on October 29, 1945 and was there until 1947. He was then transferred to Plant Hagood Steam Plant.  Mr. Wessel was there until July 1957 when he was transferred to McMeekin Station as Supervisor of Operations. He was then transferred to Canadys Steam Plant.  Mr. Wessel was transferred back to the Columbia Office in charge of Safety and Training.  Mr. Wessel retired from SCE&G May 1, 1983 after 37 years.

Mr. Wessel was a former member of the SCE&G Engineers Club, Manager of SCE&G, and past president of the Pine Island Club. He was a lifetime member of the St. Andrews (Charleston, SC) Lodge #367, and DAV-D Whitman 51.

Mr. Wessel was a member of St. Michael's Lutheran Church, Columbia, SC having served on the church council from 1978 to 1981. He was a former Improvement Fund Secretary, Lutheran Men Life Time Member and a very active choir member.

Surviving are his children: one son, Stephen F. (Kathy), Lexington, SC; giving him 6 grandchildren; daughter, Sharon W. Glass, Blountville, TN, giving him 3 grandchildren; Lynne W. Orr, Pelion, SC, giving him 5 grandchildren. There are several great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made the St. Michael's Cemetery Fund or St. Michael's Choir Fund.

Margeart Pauline Shuffler, 88 passed away around noon on Friday, February 1, 2013 at the Johnson City Medical Center.  She was born on November 19, 1924 in Washington County, Tennessee to the late Clyde & Lula Mae Scalf Beck. Margeart was a life long resident of Johnson City. She was of the Pentacostal Faith. Loving people was a special interest of hers.

In addition to her parents, she was is prededed in death by husband, Frank David Whitaker, husband Ceicle Shuffler, four sons, Steve Whitaker, David Whitaker, Frank Whitaker, Eddie Shuffler; daughters, Fae Smithpeters & Carol Bennett.

 Mrs. Cox was born September 28, 1920 in Washington County, TN to the late Byrd, & Cora Taylor Baxter. She lived her adult life in the Kingsport, TN area except for a few years she lived in FL.

 In 1939 Nelle graduated from Fall Branch High School with honors and then attended Whitney Business College. She worked for several places including North Electric and retired from K-Mart in FL where she was affectionately called "Miss Nelle" by her co-workers and close friends.

 Nelle was an avid reader, loved to work crossword puzzles and was of the Baptist faith.    

 In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister Opal Baxter and a son Phillip Vance Cox.

 Survivors include her daughter Kathy Cox; A son Michael Cox; daughter-in-law Sherry Cox; two granddaughters Alexandra and Victoria and their children; and a special cousin Fern Taylor.

 It was Mrs. Cox's wishes to be cremated and she had requested that there to be no funeral services.

Darrell Fitzgerald, 66, passed away on Thursday, November 1, 2012 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Darrell Fitzgerald was born May 19, 1946, in Washington County, TN; a son of the late Cecil and Ruby Brown Fitzgerald. He spent his entire life in the Gray area.

Mr. Fitzgerald graduated from Sulphur Springs High School and went on to retire from the Washington County Highway Department after 25 years. He enjoyed being outdoors fishing, watching deer and hunting, but mostly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Darrell Fitzgerald was a member of Gray Freewill Baptist Church, Gray, TN. He was a past volunteer with the Gray Volunteer Fire Department and former Washington County Constable.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Fitzgerald is preceded in death by his Wife, Volena Fitzgerald, and Sister Erma Marbry.

Darrell Fitzgerald, 66, passed away on Thursday, November 1, 2012 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Darrell Fitzgerald was born May 19, 1946, in Washington County, TN; a son of the late Cecil and Ruby Brown Fitzgerald. He spent his entire life in the Gray area. 

Mr. Fitzgerald graduated from Sulphur Springs High School and went on to retire from the Washington County Highway Department after 25 years. He enjoyed being outdoors fishing, watching deer and hunting, but mostly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Darrell Fitzgerald was a member of Gray Freewill Baptist Church, Gray, TN. He was a past volunteer with the Gray Volunteer Fire Department and former Washington County Constable. 

In addition to his parents, Mr. Fitzgerald is preceded in death by his Wife, Volena Fitzgerald, and Sister Erma Marbry.

Survivors of Darrell Fitzgerald include his Daughter Lisa Fitzgerald-Harmon and Husband Jeff Harmon of the home, Son Teddy William Fitzgerald and Wife Atina Fitzgerald both of Gray, TN; Granddaughter Chelsie Ridenour of Gray, TN; a Sister Delta Buckingham, Gray, TN; and Brother Dale Fitzgerald of Jonesborough, TN. Many special cousins and close friends.

The Fitzgerald family will receive friends on Monday, November 5, 2012, from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Snyder's Memorial; 5913 Kingsport HWY, Gray; Funeral Service for Darrell Fitzgerald will follow at 8:00 p.m. with Pastor Darin Harrison and Rev. Gene Lasley officiating.
